Our Guide to Ialysos Rhodes – 10 Highlights

The coastal town of Ialysos is located in the northeast of Rhodes island, just a 15-minute drive from Rhodes Diagoras Airport. The route from Ialysos to the airport is also served by frequent public buses every 20-30 minutes and costs 2.50 Euros. Ialysos is very conveniently located between the capital and the airport and is the right choice for holidaymakers who prefer a short transfer or taxi ride to their hotel.

Ialysos, Rhodes – Surfer’s Paradise and Prime Beach Destination

Named after the ancient city of Ialysos, today’s town lies directly on the coast in the northeast of the island of Rhodes, west of Cape Zonari, and is considered one of the best spots for surfers. This is due to the so-called “Meltemi”, a wind that blows only along the west coast of Rhodes and provides a refreshing breeze. Ialysos has practically merged with the neighboring resort town of Ixia.

It is this wind that attracts visitors to long days at the beach. The gentle breeze makes spending time by the sea pleasant without it getting too hot. The beach umbrellas set up there also provide protection from excessive sun exposure.

In the town itself, there’s St. Mary’s Church, which impresses any architecture enthusiast. And those looking for a lively nightlife will find numerous clubs, taverns, and discos less than 1,000 meters away.

The holiday season in Ialysos begins in May and ends in October. The most pleasant time for a beach vacation is in May, June, and the summer season. For water sports, I recommend visiting in July or August, as more steady winds blow during this time. For those who can’t stand the heat at all, it’s best to visit in May or September.

Where to Stay in Ialysos

Ialysos offers all kinds of accommodations: from 1-star to 5-star hotels, to studios and vacation rentals, all the way to all-inclusive resorts.

I stayed at Momentum Villas. The villa was gorgeous! Definatly has the wow factor. All rooms were perfect and clean. The outdoor area was amazing, heated pool, comfy loungers. I arrived at the villa a few hours early as I had spent the previous week on the other side of the island. Francesca kindly let me in straight into my room.

Things To Do in Ialysos

Ialysos offers a great mix of windsurfing, historical sites, local dining, and outdoor excursions. Ialysos is the second-largest city on the island, after the capital, and was one of the first cities to emerge on Rhodes in ancient times. Ruins of an ancient settlements were discovered here — the very one that served as the predecessor to the modern town. Fragments of public buildings, houses, and sanctuaries have been preserved here. It is believed that ancient Yalissos was founded in 1500 B.C.

The center of Ialyssos has retained the charm of a traditional Greek village. A stroll through the cobblestone streets, lined with whitewashed houses, small craft shops, and local taverns, is an experience not to be missed.

At one of the taverns, you can sample the local cuisine and enjoy typical dishes such as gyros, Greek salad, and souvlaki. Take the opportunity to buy local products like olive oil and handmade pottery as souvenirs of your visit.

Explore Filerimos Hill for History and Panoramic Views

One of the must-see sites in Ialyssos is the Filerimos Hill, an ancient settlement offering panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea. Here you’ll find the Filerimos Monastery, built in honor of the Virgin Mary, as well as the ruins of a temple dedicated to Zeus and Athena.

Ialysos Beaches

In addition to many organized beach sections with lounge chairs and restaurants, there are also a number of sections open for free use with showers and changing rooms. You should however be aware of the pebbles, which aren’t very comfortable to lie on. After a bumpy entry into the cool water, the seabed gradually becomes more sandy. The depth increases relatively quickly.

Since Ialysos lies on the windward side of Rhodes, the sea here is also rougher than on the other side of the island. Anyone planning a typical beach vacation with a sandy beach and calm waters is better off at other locations on Rhodes, such as the popular beach destination Faliraki.

The west coast is always very windy, making these sports a lot of fun. The beach is suitable for both beginners and advanced enthusiasts, as equipment rentals and lessons are available here.

You can also take advantage of the flexibility of a rental car to easily get there and enjoy a day filled with sun and sea. Of course, you can also just relax on the beach or take a dip in the refreshing sea to cool off in the summer heat.

Ixia Beach

Ixia Beach Rhodes

Ixia Beach is a pebble beach. Ixia isn’t among the most beautiful spots for a beach vacation. The beaches on the east coast are definitely better suited for that.

Nevertheless, swimming is possible and quite common. Sun loungers are available—as they are almost everywhere on Rhodes—for a daily fee. However, you should be mindful of the current—it usually flows sideways toward Rhodes Town. In return, swimmers and sunbathers are treated to an unparalleled view across the ink-blue waters of the Aegean Sea, all the way to the Turkish coast.
