Rhodes, the largest island in the Dodecanese, is perfect for a relaxing beach vacation thanks to its Mediterranean climate. But when is the best time to visit this sunny island, and what kind of weather can you expect?

The Best Time to Visit Rhodes

The best time to visit Rhodes, Greece is between May and October, when temperatures are comfortable, rainfall is low, and conditions are ideal for exploring. For those who prefer a slightly cooler climate, visiting in the shoulder season during April or November will provide pleasant weather for outdoor activities.

What is the climate like in Rhodes?

Rhodes has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. The sun shines more than 3,000 hours a year. The best time to visit is from May through October, when daytime temperatures range between 24 and 32 degrees Celsius. During this time, there is hardly any rain, and the sea is pleasantly warm.

According to Greek mythology, Rhodes was once a gift from Zeus to the sun god Helios. It seems that, in gratitude, Helios continues to show his best side to this day. With over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, the Greek island is currently Europe’s sunshine champion. Starting in mid-May, lovers of the Mediterranean climate are already in for a treat, and until early October, the probability of rain is close to zero. During these months, the sea has a water temperature of 19–25°C.

The west coast is windier than the east coast, which can be particularly significant in midsummer. In July and August, temperatures inland and on the island’s less windy east coast can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius. If that’s too hot for you, consider staying on the windward west coast, where a steady breeze provides pleasant cooling and brings temperatures down by a few degrees.

Whether on the east or west coast, or on the surfer’s peninsula of Prasonisi in the far south, sandy beaches and rocky coves are scattered all along the coast, though the east coast of the nearly 80-kilometer-long island has a slightly greater variety to offer. The north of Rhodes is also more developed for tourism than the south.

For those who want to experience culture and nature in addition to sand and beaches, we highly recommend autumn as a travel season: Even at the end of October, the sea is still wonderfully warm at around 20 degrees Celsius, and a sweater is needed only for the evening hours. The beaches are considerably less crowded, as are the numerous sights such as the Old Town of Rhodes City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the spectacular Acropolis of Lindos. Above all, however, fall is a great time for hiking, when you can explore the island’s mountainous interior. Midsummer is simply too hot for hiking.

An absolutely worthwhile must-see: Petaloudes, the Valley of the Butterflies in the northwest of the island. In this biotope, where guided hikes are offered, thousands of “Russian bears”—a species of butterfly from the bear moth family—swarm between late June and mid-September.
